Ranch House Renovations
Modernizing The Convential Style

Most owners of the conventional ranch style house consider their home to be a simple, ground floor only structure. To upgrade its appearance and to add more functional features many ranch house owners undertake simple, though sometimes quite involved, renovations. This coupled with extensive landscaping work can make the home stand out in the neighborhood.

Typically, a ranch house consists of a kitchen, living area, two or three bedrooms and one full and one-half bathroom. Most ranch houses have a full basement and many have a garage attached, with entry to the house via the kitchen.

Undertaking ranch house renovations can be something as simple as adding a front porch or deck to the back of the home. Often the owner will build a patio area at the front of the house or builds walls and partitioning in the basement so as to create more usable living space.

One of the first steps when considering ranch house renovations is to determine what you actually want to accomplish through the renovations. This can be worked out quite easily by thinking back about how many times you have thought something to the effect that you wish the house had something that it was lacking. Maybe you thought that to round the structure off it needed an enclosed porch on the back with the back door opening onto a patio area. Alternatively you may be considering including in your ranch house renovations an open wood deck, or a concrete floor with a roof, or a fully enclosed structure designed to offer extra space for relaxation or entertaining guests.

You may be very satisfied with the basic external appearance of your home but you may wish to add some individual space inside that will be reflected in the outer appearance of your home. It may be that your family has a need for additional bedrooms, or you want to add a study room, a den or even a bar inside your home. If the ranch house renovations you are intending to undertake do not fit into the home’s basic floor plan you may, as an option, consider adding partitions and walls in the basement area to create separate rooms.

Your basement area most likely houses some of your utilities, like heating and water pumps and tanks. By constructing walls around this equipment you could quite easily convert the remaining space into a recreational area or family room. Alternatively while you are carrying on your ranch house renovations you could build more walls in the basement to create more than one area so the new individual rooms could be used as bedrooms or other rooms for study and play.
